Historical context
In the 1920s, a new artistic movement - Boychukism - was formed in Ukraine under the leadership of the prominent Ukrainian artist Mykhailo Boychuk. A movement of artists who set the goal of preserving the traditions of Renaissance art and folk art of Ukraine. Based on them, they created new Ukrainian modernism. Among these artists was my great-grandfather - Honored Artist of Ukraine Hryhorii Dovzhenko. He admired Boychuk's ideas and was inspired by Ukrainian folk art and ornaments with centuries-old history and traditions. His goal, like all Boychukists, was to spread new Ukrainian art and culture.

Modern days
Unfortunately, in 2022, terror came again to the territory of Ukraine in the form of a full-scale Russian armed invasion. Many towns were first brutally shelled and then occupied. Among them is Nova Kakhovka, where many works of my great-grandfather remain. Since most of the local residents have evacuated, and the town is still under occupation, it is currently impossible to determine whether any of the works remained intact. We can only hope for that.

Project
Wanting to preserve the memory of my great-grandfather's works and introduce youngest children to Ukrainian culture and art, I decided to take as a basis the carved facades of the buildings of Nova Kakhovka and transfer them in the form of decoration to the walls of the kindergarten. In this way, children from an early age will be able to get acquainted with the Ukrainian cultural, historical and artistic heritage, which my great-grandfather created. Hence the name of the project - unification of past and future generations with the help of art, as these ornaments carry the cultural code of our nation.
All illustrations are made in complementary colors to the color of the floor, which creates a unified design of each individual room. Every wall design has its own motif, but a similar compositional solution and elements echoing between different rooms create a common theme for the decoration of the entire kindergarten. Every ornament contains many interesting details that will encourage children of any age to study them. And at the same time, to study the culture and art of Ukraine.
